How healthy is your business?

Calum MacRae Jul 17, 2020

The easiest and most obvious way to judge the health of a business is to look at its current financial results and review the results against previous years’ figures or budget.

This sounds simple but the reality is that the financial figures are the end result. They don’t take into account how the results are achieved or what is working (and not working) in the business.

Having a business framework such as ESIP (Environment, Structure, Implementation and People) will assist you in achieving consistently positive results. Great results and success do not simply happen; having an effective structure to work within provides ongoing positive outcomes for your business.

THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF PERFORMANCE

1.Environment

  • What culture exists in your organization? What culture do you want?
  • What resources are available to your team to enable them to do their job?
  • What current and future technology is required?

2. Structure

  • What tools do you use to measure growth and performance?
  • What KPI’s do you have in place? Are they relevant?
  • Are policies and procedures used and followed? How are they reviewed?

3. Systems / Implementation

  • What systems do you use?
  • How do you educate your team? How do you assess the results of this education?
  • What is in place to review and measure your systems?

4. People

  • How do you train your team in the structure and systems of your business?
  • How do you match KPI’s to their job description and daily tasks?
  • How do your team communicate and give feedback?
  • What is the criteria for success in your organization?

What business framework do you use? How does it impact the health of your business?
