What can cause fear?

A popular theory is that the trigger for fear is the threat of harm, real or imagined.

This threat can be against our physical, emotional or psychological well-being.

Scientists believe that we are born with only two fears - the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. This would imply that the rest of our fears are learned, which is a good thing. Since we are the root cause of our fears, we have the power to overcome them.

While there are certain things that trigger fear in most of us, we can learn to become afraid of nearly anything.

Learned Fears

Fears are generally learned through experience or observation.

If you didn’t succeed the first time you tried something, this doesn’t mean that you will not be successful when you try again.

Studies of the brain have shown that a person learns to fear regardless of whether they have experienced trauma or if they have observed the fear in others.

Fear in Business

To improve in business, taking action is the most important thing you can do. But when you do take action, there will be times when your results are not what you wanted. When this occurs, be aware that if you simply stop looking for opportunities and do not continue to ‘do’ and move forward, you will create a definite recipe for failure.

In this scenario, it’s important to evaluate what went wrong, review other options available to you, and act upon them. Instead of allowing ourselves to imagine a worst-case scenario and be a victim of our fears, we can take control of our own minds and consciously decide to visualize a best-case scenario instead.

So, when you feel fear in your business

  1. Stop
  2. Take a deep breath and evaluate whether the fear is an emotional response or a real event
  3. Determine what the real fear is
  4. Identify what can be done to overcome this fear
  5. Develop your next plan of action

OR you can touch base with your own confidante or Business Coach to work through this process. This tends to show better results, as the other party does not have an emotional attachment to the fear and can help you create a positive environment to move forward.

The EBS team is here to help you work though how the concepts raised in this blog relate to you and your business. As an independent party, we assist you to determine where your blocks are and look at strategies and options to keep developing your business, even when times are tough.
